Competency 7: Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social environment.
Social workers are knowledgeable about human behavior across the life course; the range of social systems in which people live; and the ways social systems promote or deter people in maintaining or achieving health and well-being. Social workers apply theories and knowledge from the liberal arts to understand biological, social, cultural, psychological, and spiritual development. Social workers
• utilize conceptual frameworks to guide the processes of assessment, intervention, and evaluation; and
• critique and apply knowledge to understand person and environment.
How I demonstrated my competency learning:
In order to accomplish my learning for this particular competency I realized I had to do more than just sit and talk with my patients. I wanted to have a whole new experience and hear from more than one person in a room. There were a few group sessions I participated in such as self-help groups, grieving groups, and support groups. I found that allowing people to share similar experiences not only helps them express themselves, but they as learn how to recognize that healing is in the relationships created when one is in a crisis. I needed to understand what people thought during their grieving process to better help my patients who I had to discuss end of life conversations.
