I find it fascinating to help others in my own community. Whenever there is an opportunity to help I take advantage of it! I enjoy applying my social work values in my personal and professional life. Here is an example of how my help and those of other social work students helped impact Christmas last year for children at the Stella Sanford Child Development Center in Sioux City.
I have learned, with the help of my social work courses, that culture shouldn’t be a barrier when it comes to helping communities of other cultures. Last year, I participated in a Native American cultural March for Lost Children. This year I walked side by side with families who have been impacted by the welfare system. I personally believe that involvement with other cultures will help a person become more culturally competent. It’s the small feet that help make a HUGE impact in the community!
